Nüvi(R) 200 Portable GPS Navigator w/3.5" Display/Rechargeable Battery/SD Slot

Garmin Nüvi 200 Portable GPS Navigator.     $296.00

Nüvi 200 Portable GPS Navigator w/3.5" Display/Rechargeable Battery/SD Slot.

No Professional Driver Should Be w/o a GPS Navigator

There are cheaper GPS systems, but speaking from experience, this is the cheapest one we are familiar with that still provides the needed functionality for the professional driver. RoadTrucker is recommending this for the budget conscious Professional Driver because it has all of the important features of the Garmin GPS we use, and for about $500 cheaper.

We specifically like the way the Garmin Nuvi recalculates, if by some chance you get on a new road that it is not familiar with. It shows the vehicle off the road and recalculates until you get to a known road. We also like the way you can enter a crossroad instead of an address. For example, when you want to make a stop somewhere, you can add the waypoint as an intersection and the Garmin will recalculate the route which includes that intersection. And here's a nice feature use that you may not have thought of. You can use it sitting at home to show a route and also the time it will take you to drive the route.  We have found it to be fairly accurate, and when you drive, it will adjust to your driving.

Two other features we really like is that the map will show the streets as you pass so that you can learn your way around town without straining to see the street signs, which is dangerous, to say the least. The Garmin will also give you voice direction warnings like "Turn Right in 500 Yards, so if your like me and day dream while you drive, you do not end up driving miles past your location. In our opinion, this is one of the most valuable features of a GPS. Without it, you may as well have a paper map. It is also a nice safety feature since your not always looking at the GPS to see where you are. And just in case you are wondering, the Garmin, I bought and am exceptionally happy with is the Nuvi 660. And yes, I would highly recommend it, if $800 is in your budget. Our price is $649.50.

OK, so you may be wondering what you have to give up for your $500 savings. Maybe I should say for your $350 plus savings, since you can get the Nuvi 660 for a lot less than I paid for mine. See my answer after the following features of the Garmin Nüvi 200 Portable GPS Navigator.

As promised, here is what you will give up if you get the Gamin Nuvi 200 instead of the Garmin Nuvi 660. Ask yourself, "Do I really Need any of the following?". If not, then buy the Garmin Nuvi 200 and save yourself several hundred dollars.

  • The Screen is Smaller 2.8"W x 2.1"H versus 3.81"W x 2.25"H
  • The resolution is a little less 320 x 240 pixels versus 480 x 272 pixels. Note: This is a little misleading because the screen is smaller, so the difference is not as much as it would appear.
  • Display type: QVGA color versus WQVGA color
  • Battery life: Up to 5 hours versus up to 7 hours
  • Preloaded Maps are Regional (Doesn't Name all the streets like the 660 does, unless it is part of your route directions)
  • Does Not Speak the Street Names ("Turn Left in 500 ft" versus "Turn right ON ELM STREET in 500 ft.")
  • Does Not Have Hands-free calling with Bluetooth® Wireless Technology.
  • Does Not Play MP3s.
  • The Nuvi 200 is Not FM Traffic Compatible.
  • Does Not Have a Headphone jack/Audio line-out.
