Welcome to the forum, rkurz923!
Some say you cannot cross until midnight and if it is big, you will need escorts. There are some that all they do is the city. Pay their fees and it will be to your benefit.

A Variety of Trucking and Traveling Items
Well, my friend have taken an over sized load to the island over the G. Washington Bridge. It was a pain, he said. By the time he paid the escort, permits and tolls, he said that it cost about $500 for just 35 miles.
Thanks for the info From what i've learned you must contact a survey company to do a ok of your route to Long Island which is dumb because there is really only one way for trucks but must first request a permit and then be told you need a survey. this all takes a couple of days. You then go to the toll booth and wait till midnight and then they send you over. Idon't know about pilot cars yet i'm sure the permit will tell me that.
