    Tires

I am planning a trip from Sacramento to Tulsa around July 2018. This will be our first trip over 4 hours long. I bought my 2000 Monaco Executive 2 years ago. The Salesman said the tires on it were brand new. My mechanic looked at it and said the front tires are "new" the 2 back duals are re-treads. I will be traveling with my boyfriend, his sister, and my 3 BELOVED dogs - I want to make sure the tires are safe, so I figured I could at a minimum replace the 2 front tires and then move those 2 to the back.

Any recommendations on tire brand? safest rotation? etc etc???

    Many thanks in advance!

recaps are good tires. as long as there is good tread depth, i would not replace them.

truckers use recaps all the time.

Really?? I just found out there are 2 circled numbers to tell you how old the tires are also. The tread is good on all of the tires, but since the RV sits a great deal in uncovered storage, dry rot is cause for concern too.

    Thank-you for your answer!

how old are the tires? do you actually see dry rot?

if so, instead of buying brand new, you too can choose to buy recaps, Bandag is a good recap.

as far as tire rotation goes, just switch the fronts to the other side, the rear duals can be switched to the other side as well. or, switch the inner to the outer as well.

i'd pay very special attention to the spare(s) you carry along as well.

I haven't looked to see how old they are yet, but it's been added to my boyfriends honey-do list. I bought the RV 2 years ago and the tires were already on it. The salesman told me they were new, less than a year old, but I'm not sure I believe him. They look really good, no brown spots or fringey-fuzzys, and the tread is REALLY good. I"m just paranoid about a front tire blowing out and the then the darn thing might flip. I saw that happen on facebook, it scared the bejeezus out of me and I REALLY would rather avoid that situation if I can. I will definitely check into Bandag. I don't remember having a spare tire anywhere .... something else to put on the honey-do list!

i can understand your concern for the tires, i really can. but any tire for that matter can have a defect, right off the manufacturing line.

do you see visible cracks in the sidewall?

i wish i can remember, but i thought that at least 8 to 10 years was the max for tires, then get rid of them?

When properly stored in a climate controlled warehouse, tires have an almost unlimited shelf life, and once they're on the road, proper care can add many years to a tire's life. "In general, we see six years of service with no more than 10 years of total life since manufacture."
