The most common recommendation for music to prevent you from dozing off at the wheel during long drives is to tune in to something you hate, and let the frustration prevent you from nodding off. While this may be a successful tactic, it probably contributes to road rage!

Ideally, you have a CD player in your vehicle that is MP3 compatible, or a stereo deck that allows you to plug in flash drives or MP3 players. This lets you be fully in control of your music choices and you can create various mixes of your favorite tunes to keep you company - and alert - while you're on the road.

If you make your own driving mix, make sure the songs you choose are upbeat, well known and make you feel good when you listen to them. This is the best way to stay alert because you'll be enjoying the music too much to fall asleep! Here are some great suggestions for a musical mix to accompany you on your next road trip:

    • Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf
    • Fun, Fun, Fun - The Beach Boys
    • Start Me Up - The Rolling Stones
    • Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
    • On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
    • I've Been Everywhere - Johnny Cash
    • Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
    • Life is a Highway- Tom Cochrane
    • Free Fallin' - Tom Petty
    • I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
    • The Boys of Summer - Don Henley
    • Heads Carolina, Tails California - Jo Dee Messina
    • Six Days on the Road - Dave Dudley
    • Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
    • (Comin' to) America - Neil Diamond
    • Papa Loved Mama - Garth Brooks
    • Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young

The next time you head out on a road trip or long haul, make sure you bring a mix of your favorite toe-tapping tunes with you to keep your head up and your eyes open!
