    Other terms for referring Heavy Vehicle Used Tax (HVUT) also include Form 2290, Truck Tax and Highway Vehicle Tax.

    Who Must File Form 2290 ?
    Anyone who

    � Has a truck with an estimated weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file Form 2290 and pay the HVUT
    � LLC
    � Corporations and organizations
    � Partnership

    What do I need to file Form 2290 ?
    � The EIN (Employer Identification Number) and VIN (Vehicle Information Number)
    � The gross weight of the vehicle
    � Name and address of your trucking business

    When to file Form 2290 ?

    HVUT must be filed using the Form 2290 each year. The current tax year is from 01 July 2019 and extends till 30 June 2020.

    If you have registered a heavy highway vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more in your name in , then you must file IRS form 2290 and pay the HVUT . If you�ve used your vehicle for the first time in the current month, then IRS HVUT must be filed within the last day of the following month. When you file with eForm2290, you will receive your Schedule 1 copy in a few minutes after IRS accepts your tax filings. Same rules apply irrespective of whether you�re paying the tax or reporting suspension of the tax.
    Form HVUT Penalties
    Penalty for HVUT is quite high. A failure to file your IRS form 2290 by 31st August of a tax year is equal to 4.5% of your total tax due. This is assessed on a monthly basis for up to five months.

    How to file Form 2290 ?
    There are 2 ways of filing Form 2290

    1. Paper filing
    2. E-filing

    IRS suggests the truckers in to file HVUT online since it is much easier, secure and faster compared to paper filing. Not only this, when your paper file, you have to manually mail your returns to the IRS office. When you file your Form 2290 online, you will get your stamped Schedule 1 copy within 15 minutes of IRS acceptance, but for paper filing, this will take about 5-45 days to receive your copy.
