  • Medical Certification and SMOKING

A driver over 35 yrs. of age who smokes must have a lung capacity function test (spirometry). If not sufficient lung capacity then next test is a Pulse Oximetry test. All test done at the time of DOT Exam, no additional cost in my office for these test.

    Pulmonary Function Tests
Three Pulmonary Tests are used for the certification of
    drivers with pulmonary disease.

    - Pulmonary Function Test (PFT, Spirometry)
    • Often the first test to be initiated
    - Arterial Blood Gases (ABG) and/or
    - Pulse Oximetry
Other testing may include a chest X-ray, lung volumes,
    diffusion and sleep studies.

Chantix is used for smoke cessation. Chantix has been shown to cause significant mood altering episodes to include seizures, aggression, suicidality, dizziness, depression. Side effects may worse while
    withdrawing from medication.

DOT certification approved after Waiting Period: 2 weeks after discontinuing Chantix

Do Not Certify if: Driver is currently taking Chantix

This information is collected from several instructional, institutional, medical, and educational sources. This should not be your sole source of information. Although I am a Nationally Certified Medical Examiner the answers for your particular situation is only my opinion and how I interpret the DOT Medical Exam process. You should discuss your particular situation with your Doctor and Medical Examiner.

    IMPORTANT
In the past if you were unhappy with the results of your DOT physical exam you could simply go down the road and get another. NOW the DOT Medical Examiner is required to enter your Exam results into the DOT National Database as either qualified, not qualified, or temporarily disqualified. So any problems must be resolved with the original Medical Examiner before an acceptable medical card can be issued to the driver.
