12-Volt Microwave Kit InstructionsIt is fairly easy to get yourself a 12 Volt Microwave Kit and as long as you can hook an inverter to the battery, you should have little trouble. Choose a regular 120 Volt Microwave with the lowest wattage you can find. This will probably be 600 watts to 800 watts. The lower the better, as Microwaves at 12 volts pull a lot of amps.
Purchase a 12 Volt to 120 Volt Power Inverter rated at least 1 1/2 times the power rating of the Microwave.
Example:
600 Watt Microwave 1,000 Watt Inverter 50 Amps at 12 Volts
700 Watt Microwave 1,200 Watt Inverter 59 Amps at 12 Volts
800 Watt Microwave 1,500 Watt Inverter 67 Amps at 12 Volts
1,000 Watt Microwave 2,000 Watt Inverter 84 Amps at 12 Volts
Inverters generally com with wiring already sized for the Inverter's MAX power rating, so all you have to do it hook it up. The Red Positive wire to the Positive terminal of the battery and the Black Negative wire to the Negative terminal of the battery. Mount the inverter as close to the battery as is reasonable because the higher amps are on the 12 Volt DC side, hence the larger wire. Then plug in your microwave and use it.
Note: It is best to run your Microwave with the Vehicle running. And it is always a safe bet to get a larger Inverter for future use. Inverters tend to be very inefficient, as they draw power even when they are not being used, so naturally the better Microwave is the real 12 Volt DC Microwave. Try to find yourself a 120 Volt Microwave that uses as little power as possible. It is unlikely you will find one less than about 700 Watts, but do not go less than 550 watts. Next if you do not already have one, purchase a 12 Volt Inverter that is about 1 1/2 times the wattage of your Microwave. A 1500 Watt Inverter should do you well for Microwaves up to about 1000 watts. Mount the Inverter as close to the battery as possible, since the high amperage will run between the Battery and the Inverter. Make sure this wiring is sized correctly for the Inverter. Normally the correct wiring comes with the Inverter. The wire between the Inverter and the Microwave should be the size of the power wire on the Microwave.
